Deering Vega
Little Wonder Banjo |
Deering Vega Little Wonder - Open back
(padded gig bags and cases extra)
The Pot:
Standard 11" diameter
Satin finish
Adjustable tailpiece
3 ply maple rim
Single coordinator rod
The Neck:
Rock Maple
Satin finish
Slender profile
All geared tuners
Ebony fingerboard
Mother of Pearl dot inlays
Achievement:
The new Vega Little Wonder is a remarkable achievement
in blending a versatile, bright, responsive banjo with a
very modest price. The sound of this banjo is ideal for
old time music, both finger style and clawhammer, folk,
classical, civil war era, ragtime and for classic turn
of the century parlor music. (Nylon or gut string
banjoists will find the response and character of this
banjo appropriate for their styles) It is also a perfect
choice for any player who wants a powerful, versatile
banjo that is not too heavy. (Try this one with a few
bluegrass licks and you'll see what we mean by
versatile.) This banjo is an upgraded version of some of
the early economy oriented Vega banjos.
Construction:
The Little Wonder has a natural blond, three ply rock
maple rim and a rock maple neck also finished in natural
blond finish. The satin finished neck is fitted with an
ebony fingerboard, inlaid with mother of pearl dots.
Many of the older Vega models in this range were made
with softer wood fingerboards and multiple, veneer strip
laminated rims for reasons of economy. We only use
premium three ply rock maple rims and ebony fingerboards
for this outstanding banjo. We think you'll agree the
tone and playability are worth the effort. The rim has
24 brackets mounted on traditional bracket shoes. The
pot has one lower coordinator rod that easily and
accurately adjusts the banjo's "action" or playability.
|
Peghead:
The peghead of the rock maple neck is overlaid with
black and there is a white Vega logo adorning the
peghead. Guitar style tuning machines are used on the
new Little Wonder in the tradition of the earlier Little
Wonders. (Planet banjo tuning machines are available for
a modest upcharge) We do break with tradition however to
put on a geared fifth string tuning machine for
stability and ease of tuning. (Friction pegs may be
traditional, but they aren't as enjoyable or practical
to use.) The neck also has a two way adjustable truss
rod that allows you, the artist, to adjust the banjos
playability or action to your own style and taste.
Overview:
Thus, the new Vega Little Wonder is the culmination of
years of evolution and development, producing a
powerful, folk and early style banjo that is as at home
in today's music as it was in years past. Surpassing
early Vegas in quality parts and craftsmanship, the new
little wonder blends the best of today's technology with
yesterdays classic tone.
Warranty:
The Vega Little Wonder banjo is made in the U.S.A. and
comes with a one year warranty |

THERE IS NO BANJO AT THIS PRICE THAT COMPETES WITH
THE SIERRA. PERIOD!
Bell Bronze Tone Ring:
The Sand Cast Virgin Bell Bronze Tone Ring used in this
banjo is the same world class tone ring that is used in
the $25,000 Deering Gabriella banjo. Sand casting is
expensive, old fashioned and the undisputed best method
for making bells and tone rings. The Deering tone ring
is precision machined to two thousandths of an inch
tolerance. The importance of this quality tone ring in a
banjo of this retail price cannot be over emphasized.
The Sierra's tone is competitive (and superior in many
cases) with banjos priced 40% higher and beyond. The
Sierra tone is rich, powerful, full bodied, crisp and
bell like.
Three Ply Maple Rim:
The three ply rock maple rim is the same used in all
Deering tone ring banjos and is the standard by which
every banjo is judged because it produces the best
sound.
The one piece resonator flange is cast from a similar
zinc alloy used in the classic banjos in the past but is
much thicker and stronger for the ultimate banjo tone
and mechanical strength. This is vital to be able to
keep the head tight so the best banjo sound can be
achieved. The zinc flange allows the warm, rich
harmonics to come through.
|
The Neck:
The Sierra neck is a slender, low profile neck that is
shaped for fast accurate fingering. The ebony
fingerboard is polished to a fast smooth surface making
all left hand techniques faster and easier. The shape is
comfortable and natural for large and small hands.
Deering fret work is accurate and precise to ensure
correct intonation over the entire fingerboard.
The two way adjustable truss rod provides precision
adjustment to maintain the best playability without
buzzing.
The tuning machines on the peghead are the traditional
banjo planetary (named for the arrangement of the gears
inside) machines with a geared fifth string peg. All the
tuners are the very best quality used on our most
expensive custom banjos.
The Lifetime Warranty:
While many other companies have short or unstated
warranties, Deering's world class quality allow Deering
to easily offer a Lifetime Warranty on the Sierra Banjo |

for both powerful sound and instantaneous, sensitive
response; providing a superlative musical canvas for all
styles of music. The clear, rich and complex harmonics,
visual aesthetics and supreme playability are created by
Deering's insightful design and precision craftsmanship
to build one of the finest banjos money can buy.
TONE:
The heart of the Deering Calico banjo is the Deering
sand cast virgin bell bronze tone-ring, meticulously
fitted to the three ply rock maple rim. Sand casting is
old fashioned, expensive and the most time tested and
proven method to achieve the bell like ringing sound
considered essential by banjoists around the world.
Deering tone-rings are machined to two thousandths of an
inch tolerance for correct fit and consistent tone. This
is a bell like tone-ring of precision and power.
The Calico pot is fitted with a one piece resonator
flange that is thicker and stronger than many
competitor's banjos. The flange highlights the warm
tones and solid punch of the Deering Calico banjo.
The Calico resonator is beautiful curly maple with
tapered interior resonator sidewalls. This tapering
contributes to the quick response and clarity of tone
that is a hallmark of the Deering Calico banjo.
PLAYABILITY:
The neck is slender with a low profile for fast accurate
fingering and comfortable for large and small hands.
The ebony fingerboard is polished to a slick, fast,
surface. The frets are glued in to ensure perfect
fretting accuracy, long term stability and ease of
refretting.
The two way adjustable truss rod provides precision
adjustment to maintain superb playability without
buzzing.
|
AESTHETIC:
The neck and resonator are premium grade curly rock
maple and finished with a high gloss to highlight the
natural blonde color and beautiful grain in this
increasingly scarce and extremely desirable wood.
The striking appearance of the blonde curly hard rock
maple gives it a visual vibrant brilliance and sets the
Calico apart from the majority of banjos that are either
stained or of darker colored wood thus giving it a
special place in the world of banjos.
The neck and resonator are bound with ivoroid binding
and multi color wood purfling that compliments the
blonde, premium curly rock maple.
The curly, scroll like, mother of pearl inlays on the
fingerboard are carefully inlaid and arranged to provide
a beautiful and elegant series of position markers that
aid the player in finding the right notes.
WARRANTY:
The carefully selected materials, combined with
Deering's world renown craftsmanship and building
techniques make it easy to protect the Deering banjo
buyer with a lifetime warranty against defects in
materials and workmanship
